Retainers are essential after any form of orthodontic treatment. Wearing retainers can hold your teeth in place and allow the underlying bone and surrounding gums to adjust to the new tooth position. They help prevent teeth from returning to their previous position before the treatment.
Patients need to wear their retainers as instructed by the orthodontist to prevent relapse. There are various types of retainers. They include:
Generally, wearing the aligners at all times in the initial period after orthodontic treatment is necessary, except when eating. Subsequently, you may wear the retainers only at night but follow your orthodontist's instructions.
Ensure you store removable retainers in a special protective case. In the first few days of using a retainer, many people notice extra saliva in their mouth, which is due to natural stimulation of the saliva glands. This settles after a few days. Slight changes in speech for the first 1 – 2 days may occur.
Once your braces are removed a permanent bonded retainer is placed at the same appointment, as appropriate. A bonded wire retainer permanently holds the teeth in place with a wire bonded to the back of the front upper or lower teeth. After your orthodontic treatment is complete, you will have a 3D scan and then provided with a custom-made removable retainer. Vacuum formed retainers are clear, nearly invisible removable retainers.
A Hawley retainer is also designed to retain your teeth. It is used less commonly than vacuum formed retainers but is still the ideal retainer choice in certain cases. It is made of an acrylic palate and wire clips that help to keep it in place.
